“If there is a conflict in your mind between what you know and what you are seeing,
paint what you see because if you don’t, the result will look like something that isn’t there.”

Richard Schmid

Art is an important part of my life because I have always drawn and painted since childhood. Visiting the gardens of Monet’s Giverny home, in France, made a big impression on me because of his philosophy to “paint what is around you”, and also because he developed his gardens to always have a subject to paint. My gardens clearly are not in the same league as Monet’s gardens, but many of my paintings feature garden views or flowers grown in my garden on Amherst Island.

A favourite Richard Schmid credo suggests you “paint what you see” and so I am revelling in putting onto canvas all that I see around me. In both Plein Air work and studio painting, my subjects include home, garden, and Amherst Island landscapes, in all seasons of the year.

Now retired, I am able to focus on unlimited studio time. Acrylic is my main medium for painting in winter months, with oil painting for summer-time art. And, always, my favourite oil-based coloured pencil painting as a winding-down activity at the end of the day.
